Our BDSM communities could be adversely impacted by a well-intentioned, but overly broad, piece of proposed criminal legislation that has been introduced by Senator Christine Kehoe in the California Senate.  NCSF is asking all of you to sign and send to NCSF letters (a draft is attached below) that we can introduce if necessary at a hearing likely to be held in April, 2011. The purpose of the bill, SB 430, is to permit effective prosecution of strangulation or suffocation "in domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and elder abuse cases." But the bill's application could go far beyond those situations and result in felony prosecutions for use of hoods, gags and the like in BDSM play. There would be no requirement of "an intent to kill or injure," or of "visible injuries," and there is no mention of consent as a defense. NCSF has been in touch with Senator Kehoe's staff, which has seemed sympathetic, and has proposed modifications of the bill's language that would address our concerns.  Now we need to follow up by presenting at the hearing as many letters as possible that support the goal of prosecuting domestic violence, but only if language is inserted that protects our communities.  We urge you to sign the attached letter, modified as you see fit, and send it back to NCSF. National Coalition for Sexual Freedom 822 Guilford Avenue, Box 127 Baltimore, MD 21202-3707 Read - NCSF's Letter to Senator Kehoe Read - California SB 430 Strangulaiton Cover Read - California SB 430 Bill Strangulaiton   Re:  SB 430 (Kehoe) Strangulation Dear NCSF: I fully support the worthy goal of Senator Kehoe's proposed legislation, to ensure that strangulation and suffocation can be effectively prosecuted in cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and elder abuse. But I am very concerned that SB 430 as now worded might be used to prosecute elements of non-harmful, consensual BDSM (Bondage, Domination/submission, Sadomasochism) activity between adults, such as the use of gags or hoods. This could subject millions of tax paying, law-abiding Americans to criminal prosecution, merely for engaging in erotic, mutually pleasurable conduct. Therefore I and thousands of other Californians would be able to support this otherwise valuable legislation only if it is modified by specifically excluding non-assault activities.  I join you in urging Senator Kehoe to incorporate in this bill the language NCSF has proposed.  Sincerely, Your Name Your Address (with…
Lawless cops are a threat to everyone in America NCSF joins state and local representatives in urging everyone to file a complaint if they were present at the Eagle on September 10th, when the Atlanta police illegally detained 62 patrons and 8 employees and searched them without a warrant, reasonable suspicion, or probable cause. You can file a complaint with the Atlanta Police Department and the Atlanta Citizen Review Board which is investigating the raid: http://atlantaeagleraid.com/how-to-file-complaints If you need to maintain anonymity, then please contact Dan Grossman, who represents the Eagle and many of the patrons in connection with the raid. "Everyone needs to hear how badly our civil rights were violated." "Please call today!" urges Susan Wright, spokesperson for NCSF. "This is a clear human rights violation. Kinky is NOT a Diagnosis Help make history by signing the DSM Revision Petition now! The diagnoses in the DSM-IV-TR still subject people who practice BDSM, fetishes and cross-dressing to bias, discrimination and social sanctions without any scientific basis. We need 3,000 signatures, but we only have 2,200 now. If you don't speak up and call on the American Psychiatric Association to adhere to empirical research when revising the diagnoses in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V), then the Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders Work Group won't make a meaningful change. To sign, go to: www.thepetitionsite.com/1/DSMrevisionpetition You can make your signature anonymous on this secure petition site so it doesn't appear on the Internet or when the petition is delivered to the APA. Petition: "We, the undersigned, support the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) own goal of making its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) a scientific document, based on empirical research and devoid of cultural bias. A diagnosis of a mental disorder can have a severe adverse impact on employment opportunities, child custody determinations, an individual's well-being, and other areas of functioning. Therefore we urge the APA to remove all diagnoses that are not based upon peer-reviewed, empirical research, demonstrating distress or dysfunction, from the DSM. The APA specifically should not promote current social norms or values as a basis for clinical judgments." Support the Holiday Inn - Worthington, OH!  February 4, 2009 Please make a phone call now to support the Holiday Inn Worthington, the host hotel for Adventures In Sexuality's (AIS) Winter Wickedness Event taking place February 6-8th. The religious extremist group, Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, along with a local religious radio station in the Columbus, Ohio, area are running a smear campaign against this pansexual BDSM event.  Peter LaBarbara of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality calls the event "a freakish sadomasochistic perversion-fest" and urges people to call the hotel's corporate headquarters to pressure them into canceling "for the sake of decency and public health." Bob Burney, a religious extremist Talk Radio DJ, devoted an entire segment of his show slamming Winter Wickedness and attempting to link the event with non-consensual and criminal activities. He urged his listeners to call and mount a campaign against the hotel. (Tuesday, Part 3 starting at 10 min 42sec: ) Click here to listen. It will only take a minute for you to help! It doesn't matter where you live or if you're not going to  attend this event. Please call the Intercontinental Hotels Group Corporate Customer service line at 800-621-0555, then press option 1, then option 5, and thank them for not discriminating against groups, and for being willing to face minor adversity for the sake of our freedom.  You can also call the Holiday Inn Columbus-Worthington today at 614-436-0700 – they'll be very glad to hear a friendly voice to counter the hatred of the religious extremists.  Suggested points to make: 1. Thank you for upholding the Fair Accommodations Act and choosing not to discriminate against legal events. 2. Please don't let a small number of religious extremists manipulate you by drumming up fear with their misinformation campaigns. 3. There are over 200 weekend-long BDSM events that take place every year in America – we bring in a lot of revenue in these hard times. We like to stay at hotel chains where we have been welcomed when we're traveling on personal or business travel. 4. Organizers of BDSM events such as Winter Wickedness at The Holiday Inn comply with state and local laws prohibiting public sexual intercourse and other forms of sexual intimacy. Demonstrations, lectures and discussion groups as well as dinners and evening parties compose the variety of offerings to guests, nothing different from any of the other hundreds of conventions hosted by your franchisees on a weekly basis.  5. February 13, 2008 - The American Family News Network posted an inflammatory article condemning the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force for honoring Guy Baldwin with  their Leather Leadership Award at the 20th National Conference on LGBT Equality:  Creating Change, on February 6-10, 2008 (www.thetaskforce.org). According to the February 7th article: Peter LaBarbera, executive director of Americans for Truth commented that he is  not sure if he is more surprised by one of the sponsors of the event or by one of  the activists who will be honored. "It's incredible to me," he continues. "But the Democratic Party is endorsing an event where they're actually presenting an award for sadomasochism." A sponsorship acknowledgement notes that the Democratic National Committee gave at least $2,500 to help pay for the event. The recipient of the "Leather Leadership Award" is Guy Baldwin, a psychotherapist who has successfully lobbied against treating sadomasochism as a mental health problem. To see the entire article, go to: http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx? id=66629 In point of fact, the Democratic National Committee did not sponsor Creating Change or the Leather Leadership Award. The Task Force does have a strong history of supporting the BDSM-leather-fetish communities. In previous years, this included awarding their Leather Leadership Award to Dave Rhodes of The Leather Journal and Tony DeBlase, creator of the Leather Pride Flag, as well as providing tracks and roundtables for activists dedicated to leather community issues. "Those who persecute our communities know that The Task Force and the BDSM-leather-fetish communities have shared agendas in promoting tolerance and non-discrimination for sexual minorities, including those involved in alternate lifestyles. We grow stronger the more we stand together," says NCSF Spokesperson Susan Wright. From Guy Balwin's acceptance speech for the Leather Leadership Award at Creating Change: "One of the many reasons it is important for The Task Force to be sending these signals of acknowledgement and legitimacy out to the LGBTIQQ world is that when our enemies in the struggle for self-determination look in our direction, they can't see the amazing diversity represented in a room like this one. No, to our enemies, we all look the same. They make none of the distinctions that we, ourselves, have made. To our enemies, garbage is garbage, no matter what color we are.....how old we are.....how we smell, or how we play. And that's just one reason it's important that we build bridges between our diverse communities and…

February 10, 2006 - NCSF releases an Action Alert regarding TV's "Dr. Phil" and his latest hour-long special, where polyfidelity issues are discussed - and "Dr. Phil" tells the couple, and the viewing audience, that polyfidelity is nothing but "cheating". You need JavaScript enabled to view it Show Title: Dr. Phi Episode Title: "Twisted Love" Original airdate: February 2, 2006 Network: Syndicated - Paramount Domestic Television & KingWorld Productions Produced by: Paramount Domestic Television, in association with Harpo Productions and KingWorld Productions Description: From the show's website: "Charles says he has exhausted his relationship with his  wife of 19 years, and he's ready to try an alternative lifestyle. Instead of getting a divorce, Charles wants to explore polyfidelity -- a relationship where he is shared between his wife and his mistress. The mistress says she'll give it a try, but his wife, Tracy, says the thought makes her sick. Can Charles convince his wife to share him for the sake of their marriage? And what does Dr. Phil think? Full description and more information at http://drphil.com/shows/show/665/ NCSF Reviewer's note: Since the show's usual premise is to introduce somebody with a "problem" and seemingly work towards solutions, it's no surprise that the example of polyfidelity presented by Dr. Phil was one fraught with conflicts - and most would agree that polyamory would not be an advisable relationship structure to be taken on by this particular couple. Polyamory is not for everybody and it is certainly not something to be brought in to prop up a failing relationship. Unfortunately, rather than presenting this as one specific instance where polyamory might not be appropriate, Dr. Phil chose to scoff at its validity altogether: "I didn't just come in on a load of turnips. I look up everything that's out there. When I read 'polyfidelity' in the Dr. Phil dictionary, it says 'cheating'." All in all, the show should be critiqued for its dismissive stance towards polyamory and encouraged to understand that many people are able to enjoy healthy and supportive polyamorous relationships. News agencies are targeting one of the UN Weapons Inspectors to Iraq, Jack McGeorge, because he is a respected SM community leader and educator. McGeorge's professional credibility as a weapons inspector is being questioned in part because of his background as former Chairman of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, and as a former board member of both the Leather Leadership Conference and the educational organization, Black Rose.
For the past three years, bar owners and clubs have faced an aggressive crackdown that has targeted SM activities. Current regulations force bar owners and hotel operators to regulate customer and employee behavior, under threat of losing their liquor licenses. Educational workshops, fantasy portions of leather contests, performance art involving flagellation, as well as casual physical contact between bar patrons are currently prohibited by ABC enforcement officers.
Privacy is an inalienable Human Right! Stand up to support the Privacy Rights of Americans! The third-highest ranking Republican in the United States Senate, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), recently stated that States should have the right to proactively legislate against adult, consensual sexual relations -- particularly against adults who aren't married, monogamous heterosexuals. Santorum stated that he believed there is no such thing as a constitutional right of privacy, and that the government should be able to outlaw certain kinds of sexual activity for moral reasons.
Please take a moment to support the Alternative Hedonistic Society, of Kansas City, MO (www.ahs-kc.org). Their AHS Obsessive Fetish Ball, which did not include nudity or sexual activities, was cancelled at the last moment by the Holiday Inn Olathe. A reporter from FOX News was tipped off and contacted the Holiday Inn. AHS was completely open about the nature of the event with both the police and the Holiday Inn prior to signing a contract, but the management responded to the reporter's inquiry by canceling the event. AHS is still trying to resolve this situation with the Holiday Inn Olathe and needs your help. Please read NCSF's letter to the Holiday Inn Olathe, Kansas, then send the postcard attached below. Thank you for your help in fighting for our rights! ~~~ Steve Olson, President Holiday Inn Olathe Dear Mr. Olson, We would like to express our serious concerns regarding your cancellation of the AHS Obsessive Fetish Ball one day before the event was to take place on August 13, 2004. The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom is a national organization committed to creating a political, legal, and social environment in the United States that advances equal rights of consenting adults who practice forms of alternative sexual expression. NCSF is primarily focused on the rights of consenting adults in the SM- leather-fetish, swing, and polyamory communities, who often face discrimination because of their sexual expression. NCSF directly represents tens of thousands of consenting adults across the US, and supports the millions of adults who do alternative sexual expression. In the view of the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) your cancellation is based on a complete misunderstanding of the nature of this charitable, social event in which no nudity or sexual activities were scheduled to take place. The event organizers had ongoing discussions with the Olathe Police to ensure their complete compliance with city ordinances, and the organizers welcomed the police in walking through the event at any time. In fact, it appears the sole reason your management canceled this contract was because a reporter from the socially conservative FOX News contacted you regarding the event. Perhaps you are not aware that religious political extremist groups regularly attack events held by the alternative sexuality communities. These groups often alert the media to pressure venues into refusing to hold adult events. This tactic is both discriminatory and reprehensible. NCSF expects businesses to…
