Report: Swingers club called Shangri-Lust busted in Fort Myers
Orlando Sentinel

Authorities this week busted a swingers club called Shangri-Lust in a Fort Myers subdivison that offered an orgy room, stripper pole and a bartender who mixed and served drinks, news-press.com said.

The club, which operated out of a single-family home in the Whiskey Creek development in the 1500 block of Beechwood Trail, prompted complaints from neighbors.

The Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco accused homeowners Lawrence Angstadt, 58, and Charlotte Nottage, 50, of operating an illegal club because they didn't have an alcohol license.

Entertainment Media Update for "American Swing"

on Sunday, 12 April 2009. Hits 368

Film Title: American Swing
Release Dates: Released in theaters March 27 (NYC) and April 4, 2009 (LA); DVD release is April 14, 2009
Distributor: Magnolia Pictures

Directed and Produced by: Mathew Kaufman and Jon Hart
Producers: Gretchen McGowan, Christian Hoagland Executive Producers: Jason Kliot, Joana Vicente, Todd Wagner, Mark Cuban

Description:

From the distributor's website - "The year was 1977 and New York City burned. As the metropolis hurtled into bankruptcy, the city's nightlife hit unprecedented heights. In midtown, the ultra-exclusive Studio 54 was a cocaine-fueled celebrity clubhouse. Downtown, at the spartan CBGB's, punk rockers set out to destroy everything Pop. Meanwhile, in the basement of the prestigious Ansonia building on the conservative Upper West Side, Plato's Retreat opened its doors to ordinary couples who came to dance, to swim, and... to swap.

It was the start of a revolution. The brainchild of former wholesale meat purveyor Larry Levenson, Plato's Retreat quickly emerged as the epicenter of public sex for the 'me' generation. Previously, swinging was mostly an underground activity, engaged in primarily by the attractive and the well-to-do.

But Plato's welcomed anyone and everyone. For a mere $35, couples checked their judgments and pedigrees at the door of this clothing-optional Disneyland. Debutantes got it on next to bus drivers, as movie stars gave secretaries the 'starlet treatment.' For Levenson and others, Plato's was a utopia. For some, it is a time capsule that they are eager to forget. Utilizing exclusive interviews with former patrons, employees, and family members, intercut with riveting, never-before-seen archival materials, AMERICAN SWING brings this little-known epic of sex and excess to the big screen for the first time.

NCSF Reviewer's Note:

Though the 1970s styles and sensibilities on display in "American Swing" inspire some easy mockery, overall the documentary takes a respectful and even-handed stance towards its subject and the individuals involved--and towards swinging on the whole. In recounting their experiences at Plato's Retreat, many of those interviewed seem nearly reverential as they recall the sense of sexual freedom they discovered at the club, a good thirty years prior. Throughout, their interviews, combined with archival television clips featuring club founder Larry Levenson, the self-proclaimed "King of Swing,"
reinforce many of the common wisdoms of swinging even as practiced today: that it's not for everyone and certainly not a means of fixing a troubled relationship, but can be a healthy way to sexually explore outside the constraints of monogamy.

What's generally remembered about Plato's Retreat is its celebrity aspect, but what is truly striking in the documentary is the seemingly ordinary nature of so many of its revelers, as if the sexual revolution had expanded to encompass that couple you know from down the street. While the documentary could have benefited from a bit more context of what was happening in the swing world on a national level, it's an important and engaging account of a particular time and place in the sexual freedom movement.

The short answer is because we strongly believe in supporting those who support us and to do our part to further the mission of NCSF (National Coalition for Sexual Freedom)(www.ncsfreedom.org)  NCSF Mission: The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom is a national organization committed to creating a political, legal, and social environment in the United States that advances equal rights of consenting adults who practice forms of alternative sexual expression. NCSF is primarily focused on the rights of consenting adults in the SM- leather-fetish, swing, and polyamory communities, who often face discrimination because of their sexual expression. "We opened TABU Social Club to create an environment where people who practice forms of alternative sexual expression could congregate with other like-minded, consenting adults without fear of being judged or ostracized, a safe haven of sorts," said Rick Gonzalez, co-owner of TABU Social Club, with his wife Vicki and active member of the swinging community (more commonly referred to as the Lifestyle First came erroneous complaints filed with the Fire department, Police department, Compliance Division of Planning and Zoning add in a County Councilperson, 3 television stations, 3 radio stations and 3 newspapers all by a civic association who didn't like the thought of our existence and what do you get? Frustrated, angry and ready to throw in the towel.  Just then, almost like a scene from a super hero comic book, came NCSF (National Coalition for Sexual Freedom) offering their assistance in any way possible. Finally there was a ray of hope. When fighting a battle alone, no matter how right the cause, you can be worn down. When surrounded by people who believe in and support that cause you become stronger and much more willing to continue the fight.

Such was the case with TABU Social Club and NCSF. Widely recognized as the fastest growing "Lifestyle" club in the country, (boasting over 9000 member couples and single females), thanks in no small part to the guidance and assistance of NCSF, TABU is thriving. TABU Social Club, now a proud "Coalition Partner" of NCSF, with the assistance of Nina, owner of the "Power Exchange" (www.powerxchangebynina.com) in Baltimore, as well as many other volunteers, will be putting on a fundraiser on Friday April 3rd, 2009 with 100% of the proceeds being donated to furthering the mission of NCSF.  There will be music, dancing, light snack foods, door prizes, silent & live auctions for various goods and services and best of all Live Demonstrations to give you a small taste of some of the various "Lifestyles" that NCSF works tirelessly to support. This event is open to those 21 and over who practice forms of alternative sexual expression and to those who support our right to do so. The cost for the event is $20 per person with 100% of the proceeds being donated to NCSF. This is a BYOB event, so should you choose to drink alcohol, you must bring it yourself. We are also actively seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of the event. As simple as setup and breakdown to providing demonstrations in an area that you have some expertise to being a roving ambassador to all who attend, we can use your help. Further, we are seeking donations of goods and services to be used as door prizes as well as live and silent auction items. For more information regarding this event or to register please visit http://tabulife.com/ncsf_2009.html If you would like to volunteer your time or donate any goods or services please contact Vicki Gonzalez ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. It is time to give back to an organization that gives so much. We hope to see you there. Donations are also being taken directly at : http://tabulife.com/ncsf_registration.html
