Convicted Utah man likens polygamy to homosexuality
by Mark Thiessen

SALT LAKE CITY — A lawyer for a Utah man with five wives argued Monday that his polygamy convictions should be thrown out following a Supreme Court decision decriminalizing gay sex.
The nation's high court in June struck down a Texas sodomy law, ruling that what gay men and women do in the privacy of their homes is no business of government.
It's no different for polygamists, argued Tom Green's attorney, John Bucher, to the Utah Supreme Court.

Controversial librarian's contract not renewed

The book is closed on the librarian whose private life caused a public stir in this little town.
In a special meeting Nov. 19, The Upper Skagit Library Board voted unanimously not to renew the six-month contract of Valerie Shahan, the librarian who starred in a kinky Web site as a "sadistic, but caring" Lady Jane Grey.
Although Shahan, whose last official day on the job was Sunday, pulled the Web site after a tipster told a newspaper about it, the town was soon abuzz, with opinions widely split.

L.A. Official: Computer Labels Offensive

A county official has asked computer and video equipment vendors to consider eliminating the terms "master" and "slave" from equipment because they may be considered offensive.
"Based on the cultural diversity and sensitivity of Los Angeles County, this is not an acceptable identification label," according to an e-mail sent to vendors on Nov. 18. The memo asks manufacturers, suppliers and contractors to change or remove any labels on components "that could be interpreted as discriminatory or offensive in nature."
The county's 39 departments also were told to identify equipment with offensive labels.
The term "master" and "slave" — when applied to electronic equipment — describes one device controlling another.
