Teeth clenched, brows furrowed, he stoically endures one steady open-handed slap after the other.
Passers-by stop and gawk at the video of the tortured face filling the 13-inch black-and-white TV screen propped atop a glowing plastic male mannequin in a display window at 385 Monmouth St. in Downtown Jersey City, the only sound the methodical smack of palm against cheek every second or two.
There is no description, no caption, no explanation. The only writing associated with the display is on the awning over the storefront: Slapman.
But those who walked past the installation yesterday afternoon were quick to infer their own meanings for the piece.
"He needs help. He's a sick individual," said Rafael Valentin, 44, a marketing representative for an Edison-based HMO. He was on his way to visit the offices of a local nonprofit organization yesterday afternoon when he came across Slapman. "And the guy slapping him, he needs help too. This is supposed to be art, but I don't see it. Definitely some sort of sado-masochism going on."

They Had Reservations
By Brian McGrory (opinion column)
The Boston Globe
January 20, 2004
Not often enough in the life of any newsman does a note arrive over the transom with a sentence that reads, "As the elevator door opened, in walked a woman in a leather bustier leading, by a dog leash and collar, a man wearing nothing but a string thong."
Let's first of all thank astute reader Mark Warter, formerly of Boston, now of Rhode Island, who had the good sense to know that the issue might be of interest to the community at large.
When I called him, Warter laid bare his story. On Friday, Jan. 9, he checked into the Park Plaza Hotel with his wife, two daughters, their husbands, and his two grandchildren, all to attend his grandson's christening at the Trinity Church. Any more wholesome it doesn't get.
Ding-ding. Elevator stops. Doors open. And that's where the woman in the bustier with the man on the dog leash come in.

Police seek dismissal of suit over raid on swinger party
The Times Daily (northwest Alabama)
Associated Press report
January 18, 2004
A lawyer for Decatur's police chief and an officer has asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit over a police raid on a so-called swingers party at a motel.
The judge's decision on whether the party was public or private could determine whether the suit moves to trial.
Police arrested a bare-breasted Kathy Sue Myers on Feb. 24, 2001, while she danced with her husband and another man, according to court documents reported by The Decatur Daily for a story Sunday.
About 200 people attended the Xchange Club party at the ballroom of Decatur's Days Inn.

Police seeking dismissal of topless case
By Eric Fleischauer
The Decatur Daily News (Alabama)
January 18, 2004
Whether a bare-breasted woman at a swinger party has a claim against Decatur police may depend upon whether a federal judge decides the party was public or private, according to recently filed briefs.
Arguing for the police, George Royer of Huntsville said Myers from Piedmont violated state laws and a city ordinance by exposing her breasts. If the party was public, the city argued, Myers violated a public decency law. If private, the city argued, she violated a state law prohibiting women from being topless at "any business establishment or any private club … for entertainment purposes."
Myers' lawyer, John Sims of Hartselle, said it was a private party. He said the law prohibiting topless entertainment at a private club applies to topless bars, not to private parties.
He said several signs identified the party as private, and curtains and doors prevented the public from either seeing or entering the ballroom.
Glatch said about 20 police officers in "heavy assault attire" entered the party despite protests from club officers. As the party participants left the ballroom, Glatch said he saw Walker "continue to raise his voice and shout profanities and accusations."
