Despite uncertain economic times a deal was struck Tuesday, that will prevent two businesses in St. Joseph County from expanding. In this case, both businesses are adult bookstores in South Bend and Mishawaka.
Prosecutors filed criminal charges against both stores nearly three years ago for selling obscene materials. The move made headlines with 19-counts filed against each store including racketeering and possible seizure of assets.
In the beginning the 19-charges filed against each adult bookstore threatened to close the establishments. They included racketeering and the possibility that assets might be seized by law enforcement. In the end, the owner of the Pleasureland Museum came to court Tuesday and was fined $1,000.
On the other hand, in the plea agreement, both bookstores agreed not to sell magazines or movies that deal with a host of subjects including bondage, torture, and incest. Both businesses agreed not to expand their business activities in St. Joseph County.

Pain and pleasure – The stigma over Cuffs hurts community
by Tom Barton
Iowa State Daily

The smell of leather hangs in the air as the snap of a whip thudding against human hide echoes through a small room in the Memorial Union.
A student stands with her hands against a wall, her back to another student standing behind her with a whip in hand. The student with the whip pulls it back and lets go.
The woman’s rear end shakes and quivers with every hit, but she remains motionless, unaffected and unmoved by each hit, anticipating the feeling of the whip’s sting. A group of 10 students, clad in jeans and sweatshirts, watch as the display unfolds.
It’s a demonstration by the president of Cuffs, the ISU campus group dedicated to educating the campus about bondage, discipline, domination and sadomasochism (BDSM).

"Paddleboro" revisited: Man busted in S&M sting
by Dave Wedge
Boston Herald

In another bizarre sex scandal out of Attleboro, police in White Plains, N.Y., nabbed a man for allegedly beating a woman he met in an online chat room during a motel S&M session gone awry, police say.
"Basically, he went too far," White Plains police inspector Daniel Jackson said of 58-year-old Norman Petterson of Attleboro.
"They had a mutual interest in sadomasochistic activities," Jackson said. "Nothing had been agreed upon on sexual activity, but he went ahead and did his routine." According to police, Petterson beat the woman with a paddle and a hard brush, leaving her with bruises. The woman went to cops following the motel mayhem, but Petterson had returned to Attleboro.
An undercover cop posing as a new playmate lured Petterson back to White Plains with the promise of S&M action. "He took the bait," Jackson said.
