Coopersburg moves to stop swingers' club

Coopersburg has issued a cease-and-desist order aimed at ending Saturday night swingers parties at a borough strip club.
Club Kama Sutra held its first $60-a-head party at Silouhette Showbar, 111 E. Station Ave., last week and had another scheduled for Saturday night. The borough said the parties violate borough law because the bar was converting itself into a members-only club for the parties and the district is not zoned for such a use.
"If they open up Saturday night, they'll be cited," Borough Manager Daniel Stonehouse said this morning. "They can apply for a permit, but it would be denied, because members-only clubs are not allowed in that zoning district."
The club's first party drew only a handful of people, and also inspectors from the state police liquor control enforcement bureau who conducted an inspection after receiving complaints from the community.
The inspection uncovered a few minor violations, according to a bureau spokesman. He could not elaborate because citations do not become public record until they are filed in Harrisburg.

COOPERSBURG, Pa. — Officials in a small Lehigh County borough told a swingers' club with roots in Philadelphia to get out of town.
Coopersburg Borough Manager Dan Stonehouse told NBC 10 that a cease-and-desist order was issued to Kama Sutra, a swingers' club that was setting up shop at a strip club called The Silhouette Showbar.
Kama Sutra is a members only club and the borough isn't zoned for that kind of organization, he said.

Public Displays of Expression

As the private sector continues to expand and government regulations continue to intrude on the public realm, Art in Odd Places 2006, a collection of 25 local artists exhibiting in unexpected Lower East Side locations, will address the question of public space and whether or not it's really so public. Referring to the dialogues that will hopefully be prompted by artists' work, the project's director, Ed Woodham, wonders, "If public space is in a policed state, where else might we have these discussions?" Needless to say, spaces requiring permits were not included in the exhibition.
Flint Butera, a NYC street artist for the past 16 years, will be contributing his mixed media work, which treats book covers in a collage style and focuses on themes of bondage. Before all you salacious folks out there get too excited, know that "Tied to the City" won't be just another scantily clad look at commercial sexuality. Quite the contrary, Butera explores what it means to be tied down – emotionally or even by the prospect of death. Still, the racy pieces will be on display at Sunflower Video and Porn on Essex. Butera explains that he chose a porn shop because he wanted to examine sex in a way that has "nothing to do with sex in a place that's all sex".
