Candidate on hot seat over actress-wife's sex-club allegations

Associated Press report

via The Arizona Republic

June 24, 2004

CHICAGO – Well-educated, articulate and glamorous-looking, Jack Ryan was considered the GOP's best hope for reinvigorating an Illinois Republican Party demoralized by a corruption scandal and devastating 2002 election losses.

But those hopes were dashed in lurid fashion this week with the unsealing of divorce papers in which Ryan's ex-wife, "Boston Public" actress Jeri Ryan, alleged that Ryan took her to swingers clubs and tried to get her to have sex with him while others watched.

Ryan has come under mounting pressure to drop out of the race, and has gotten little support from party leaders. At least one Republican congressman has asked him to withdraw, several major newspapers have called on him to step aside or questioned his honesty, and the late-night comics are snickering. (Jay Leno: "Jack Ryan, I've heard of going after the 'swing vote,' but this is ridiculous!")

The court documents were released Monday after a California judge ordered them unsealed. In the papers, Jeri Ryan, the blond actress who played an alien in a skintight outfit in "Star Trek: Voyager," said her husband took her on surprise trips to New Orleans, New York and Paris and insisted she go to sex clubs with him on each trip.

God's Madam:

From spanking naughty boys to channeling, you know… Him

by Trevor Aaronson

New Times Broward-Palm Beach (Florida)

June 24, 2004

Simone Gitman wants to help me find God. A petite brunet with ocean-blue eyes the size of half-dollar coins, Gitman sits cross-legged next to me on a brown sofa with oversized cushions in the canal-front home she rents in Victoria Park. Dressed in gray sweat pants and a blue tank top that reveals the outline of her braless, diminutive breasts, Gitman puts her left hand on my chest as I breathe in and out deeply.

Gitman, whose eyes water gently as she talks about her spiritual awakening, now runs a free telephone service called Direct Dial God through which she helps South Floridians find salvation. But that's only the beginning. In fact, Gitman is about as unlikely a disciple as the Virgin Mary was a childbearer. A 32-year-old single mother and college dropout, the Fort Lauderdale woman was until last year among the better-known producers of amateur pornography in South Florida. Before that, she ran a sadomasochistic bed-and-breakfast in Fort Lauderdale and an escort service in Ohio.

Gitman landed her first job in the adult-entertainment industry as a leather-clad, whip-me-because-I've-been-a-bad-bad-boy dominatrix. She soon built a steady clientele, and after about six months, the dominatrix went on her own, building a private dungeon in the house she rented. The money was flowing. "My girlfriends noticed that I had nice clothes, a nice car, and my nails were always done," she recalls. "To them, it seemed my life was easier. One of them asked me if I could teach her how to be a dominatrix."

First Time at the S&M Store

by Marie-Jo Proulx

Windy City Times (Chicago)

June 23, 2004

Steph, who's an expert in this, had been saying I should go for weeks. But of course I didn't want to go on my own. I wouldn't know what to say, how to ask for it. And then they'd inquire about specifics and I'd look really silly not even using the appropriate vocabulary. It's one of those things you just can't fake. If you've never had one on your back and in your mouth, well, let's just say it makes it hard to determine what size best suits you.

Steph walked right up to the counter. It was covered with pictures of all sorts of bodies wearing different extreme get-ups, most with multiple straps. I think I spotted a woman tied up in some ropes and a guy right above her head, just hanging. A flash of dizziness hit me and I felt damp at my temples. This was not for me; I knew I shouldn't have come… "OK, let's see what we can do for your friend", the guy told her, looking me over with a grin. I hadn't paid attention to how she had explained my "needs", but I could tell he was relishing the thought of initiating yet another novice. He said to see Nick and gestured toward a short but very buff man in a tight yellow t-shirt. "Come on!" Steph prompted as I stood there frozen, my eyes fixed on a rack of menacing black rubber suits.

2 charged in spanking of woman

from staff reports

The Patriot-News (Pennsylvania)

June 18, 2004

One woman is in jail and another free on bail after they were charged with spanking another woman in Carlisle two weeks ago.

Police said that on June 6, Aunye Latetia Stackfield, 19, of the 500 block of Factory Street, Carlisle, and Latoya Jean Harris, 22, of the 400 block of Radnor Street, Harrisburg, repeatedly struck a woman on her bare buttocks with a belt.

Harris confronted the 20-year-old victim on North Hanover Street because she was upset that either the woman or her boyfriend owed Harris $80, police said.

Swingers may be slaves to genes:

Scientists find promiscuous voles lack key brain function linked to monogamy

by Alan Zarembo (Los Angeles Times)

as published in The San Francisco Chronicle

June 17, 2004

Scientists working with a ratlike animal called a vole have found that promiscuous males can be reprogrammed into monogamous partners by introducing a single gene into a specific part of their brains.

The research helps shed light on monogamy — a rare social behavior — and hints that perhaps specific genes could play a role in human relationships.

Voles, found in the wild throughout much of North America, have been particularly useful in studying monogamy, which in biology refers more to the complicated social bonds based on partnership than to absolute sexual fidelity.

Castor feels model's murder likely a snuff film gone bad

by Margaret Gibbons

The Mercury (Pottstown/Philadelphia)

June 17, 2004

NORRISTOWN — Montgomery County prosecutors continue to pursue a possible motive of a snuff film gone awry in the stabbing death of Canadian sex model Natel King.

However, [County District Attorney Bruce L. Castor Jr.] said, he is moving forward under two possible motives as to why Frederick would allegedly stab King to death following a photo shoot at his Conshohocken studio in February.

One of the motives is that Frederick simply did not want to pay King, as he had refused to pay one other model in the past and feared King would make trouble for him, according to Castor.

"The second motive, and what I think is more likely given the ferocity of the attack and the circumstances, is that this was supposed to be a snuff film or a film involving simulated violence during sex that escalated to actual violence," said Castor. "But whether that is a theory with which I will go at trial, I can't say at this time."

Supporting this theory, according to Castor, is an unsigned generic contract found in Frederick's possessions. That contract, which refers to snuff photographs or videos, indicates that the person signing it gives permission for the photographs or videos to be used as part of a private collection that would not be disseminated beyond members of a private club, said Castor.

This private club might have a private library somewhere "and I would like to know where that is," said Castor, adding that detectives continue to pore through numerous photo materials confiscated from Frederick to find any indication as to whether Frederick was taking snuff photos or making a snuff video.

Murder suspect rejects offer of 35-year prison sentence

by Greg Smith

The Norwich Bulletin (Connecticutt)

June 17, 2004

A Norwich man who faces murder charges in the strangling death of a city woman rejected an offer Wednesday to serve 35 years in prison. Clifford F. Gilliland, 46, is charged with murder in the death of Hope Becker, 35, and a mother of two, who allegedly was hired by Gilliland as a prostitute. Her body was found dumped on the roadside in Mohegan Park Dec. 15, 2002.

In his confession to police, Gilliland said he had picked up Becker on Broad Street and brought her to his Cedar Street home. It allegedly was not the first time he had solicited sex from Becker.

Gilliland said he had tied Becker up to an empty bed frame, part of a consensual act of bondage, left the room and returned to find her dead.

Adult Films Show Another Side of D.C.

by Marc Fisher

The Washington Post

June 17, 2004

The most powerful city in the world has a prudish reputation when it comes to sex. Danny Leal has made it his life's challenge to probe for limits to Washington's appetite for sex. So far, he can't get arrested in this town.

Leal is, according to both his own hype and others in the pornography trade, the area's leading producer of porn videos and events. Operating out of his townhouse in Oakton, Leal — known in the biz as Porno Dan — is producer, director and occasional star of backroom flicks such as "Public Exposure in D.C.," which consists of a grotesque exhibitionist exposing herself in bright sunshine in front of the Ronald Reagan Building, the American History Museum, Washington Harbour and the Washington Monument, which Leal, as narrator, identifies as "the Capitol.

Washington being a city with but a handful of strip joints, Leal had to import porn stars from Los Angeles or Baltimore. But he found that Washington has a thriving underground sex scene — swingers clubs, S&M groups, individuals who hire porn performers at $1,500 an hour to make private movies at their homes.

"D.C. has this conservative image, but the nightlife here is one of the most decadent I've seen anywhere," he says.
