Whip it good: Welcome to the World of Vegan Bondage Gear

Salt Lake City Weekly

On a particularly blistering summer afternoon, Camilla Taylor steps outside Vegan Erotica's Capitol Hill headquarters, shielding her eyes from the midday sun. She grabs a chunk of cropped blue hair, yanks on a spiky lock and widens her eyes. "It's way too hot. Let's go inside", she says. "I'm just getting started."

There's not much work to get started. Summer's not so hot for sex toys. Sweltering heat is a poor aphrodisiac, especially when would-be lovers are consumed by thoughts of air conditioning and deodorant. Taylor never thought much about seasonal libido dips until she started a career based on catering to people's sexual needs. It was last year that the 24-year-old Salt Lake City resident assumed the position of owner and operator of Vegan Erotica, an online retailer specializing in bondage gear for those eschewing meat, dairy and animal-tested products. The unique store, located in the basement of a friend's home, joins a growing crop of D.I.Y. retailers offering vegan-friendly items, from boots and belts to shampoo and contraceptives. Taylor's business is the world's only manufacturer and retailer of cruelty-free whips, floggers and other meatless kink essentials – a distinction that carries extra weight given her shop is a five-minute drive from the Salt Lake LDS Temple.a

Appleton Post-Crescent (Wisconsin)

WAUPACA — A rural New London woman accused of mutilating her husband in a sexual bondage incident was placed on probation Tuesday for one year.

Theresa L. Hedtke, 42, N2402 Bean City Road, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of battery while armed when she appeared before Waupaca County Circuit Judge Philip Kirk.

She originally was charged with a felony count of substantial battery after a May 15 incident in which she allegedly accused her husband of infidelity and cut his penis with scissors while he was bound with tape. His injury required several stitches to repair.

Man gets 6 years for basement beating death

by Margo Rutledge Kissell

Dayton Daily News

September 14, 2005

Matthew Morgan Caddy was sentenced Tuesday to six years in prison for the beating death of a man whose handcuffed body was found in his basement.

Caddy, 53, formerly known as Stephen Lee MacFarland, declined to make a statement during the hearing in which he was sentenced to five years for reckless homicide and one year for gross abuse of a corpse.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge G. Jack Davis said that in a five-page letter to the judge, Caddy expressed no remorse over the death of Daniel Rodney Everson, 43, of Litchfield, Minn.

Everson died of massive kidney failure, possibly from severe beatings on his back and shoulders with a rubber sex toy. His body was found Aug. 31, 2004.

Police found Everson's decomposed body in Caddy's basement at 88 Pioneer St. Everson's raw wrists were locked in handcuffs, which were fastened to a rope tied to a piece of wood on the floor next to his body, according to evidence at Caddy's trial. Everson's soiled, naked, bloated and bruised body appeared to have been dead for five to 10 days, Dr. Bryan Casto of the coroner's office testified.

Casto said beatings with a rubber sexual toy may have caused Everson's kidneys to fail from being overwhelmed by proteins secreted from his back and shoulder muscles.

Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Brandt said that Everson, seeking a fantasy "master-slave relationship," left Minnesota Aug. 8 on a bus to visit Caddy following correspondence over the Internet from his home in Litchfield. Brandt said Caddy had advertised himself on a Web site as "innocent looking, but with a very dark side."
