Tacoma-area man convicted of exploiting teen girl

TACOMA, Wash. — A man acquitted of rape and kidnapping charges still faces 10 years in prison for taking sexual photographs of an underage girl.

Jurors on Thursday convicted Stanley Scott Sadler, 48, of eight counts of sexually exploiting a minor. He is scheduled to be sentenced to a mandatory 10 years at a July 21 hearing.

Prosecutors said Sadler picked the girl up in Camas after meeting her though sexual bondage and discipline Web sites.

Sadler claimed the girl advertised herself online as a "sex slave," offered identification showing her as 19 and consented to everything they did.

Prosecutors didn't contest Sadler's claims about the girl's supposed age, but argued he still should have known she was younger.

Jury finds "sex master" guilty

Jurors convict 48-year-old Stanley Scott Sadler of exploiting a teen by taking sexual photos of her, but find him not guilty of charges he kidnapped and raped her. The mandatory sentence is 10 years in prison.

"Sex master" Stanley Scott Sadler didn't rape or kidnap a 14-year-old girl he was charged with victimizing, a jury concluded Thursday. But the jurors said the 48-year-old Fircrest postal worker did exploit her by taking sexual photos, and that means he'll go to prison for 10 years.

The jury of 12 men and women – all of whom declined to talk to The News Tribune after the verdict – deliberated just over eight hours Wednesday and Thursday on the 38 charges Sadler faced.

As the judge read the first five not-guilty verdicts, Sadler, a divorced father of three, began to cry in relief. But when the judge got to the guilty verdicts on some of the sexual exploitation counts, he shook his head.

Sadler met the girl through online bondage and discipline Web sites. He said she had advertised to be a sex slave, told him she was 19 and consented to everything they did together. He also testified she showed him photo identification and a birth certificate over the Internet using a Web camera.

Jurors told lawyers after the verdict they had significant doubts about Sadler's credibility, but said that, even had he seen the birth certificate over the Internet, it wasn't enough effort to check her age, defense attorney Michael Schwartz said.

To have been acquitted of the eight counts of Sadler was convicted of – sexual exploitation of a minor – he would have had to make a good faith effort to see whether she was at least 18 by having her produce some form of state-issued identification.

"None of them believed he saw a photo ID:, deputy prosecutors John Neeb said.

The selfishness of connubial communism

by Christopher Stevens (opinion)

The Washington Blade (D.C.)

Multiple marriage is getting a lot of press lately, partly as a result of the HBO series "Big Love" about a Mormon household, but more because of morals-mongering by those opposed to gay marriage.

They portray it – with some success – as "the thin edge of the wedge", in some sort of concerted, demonic effort to destroy the institution of marriage as a lifelong bond between one man and one woman, which men and women are doing a good enough job of destroying all by themselves, without help from us Homos from Hell.

This is ridiculous, of course. How is gay marriage supposed to be more encouraging to polygamy than straight marriage?

But the alleged protectors of the supposed sanctity of marriage see gay unions leading to multiple marriage, leading to people marrying anything they want, from cyborgs to sea lions. It's all illogical fear-mongering – the most effective kind, alas.

BDSM as Utopian Society

by Mistress Matisse (opinion)

The Stranger (Seattle, WA)

June 1, 2006

There was story in the media recently about a Canadian woman who claimed she was being held hostage as a slave in Darlington, England, by a BDSM group calling themselves "Kaotians". An investigation proved that she was not, in fact, being held against her will, and she has since returned to Canada.

But the man claiming to be the Kaotian leader, Lee Thompson, talked to the press about the structure and views of his group. Now, BDSM people rarely get balanced treatment in the press, so while Mr. Thompson's remarks about the Kaotian "high council", and the Kaotian "total lifestyle" made me roll my eyes, I'm willing to give him some benefit of the doubt. Aside from his inappropriate habit of leading his slave around on a leash in vanilla public settings, from what I read about him, he sounds harmless enough.

But I've met other people over the years who told me they belonged to – or wanted to create – a similar sort of urban utopian society based on a dominant/submissive principle, and who wanted me to get excited about that idea. Understand, I don't mean a social club or a political action group – I mean something that looks like a kinky fundamentalist Mormon enclave, with a group of hierarchically arranged people all living together in a fixed dominant/submissive arrangement every day, all the time.

Polygamy allowed 'limited' status

by staff writers

The Calgary Sun

June 1, 2006

OTTAWA — Multiple-wife marriages have been legally recognized in Canada to award spousal support and inheritance payments.

While the former Liberal government maintained polygamy is criminal in Canada, documents released to Sun Media through access to information show polygamous marriages have been recognized "for limited purposes" to enforce financial obligations of husbands with multiple wives.

The censored documents, which include departmental background papers and ministerial briefing notes, outlined the last Liberal government's position on the controversial subject, which erupted during debates on gay marriage.

Allowing same-sex couples to marry will enhance democratic values by promoting the equality and dignity of the individuals, while the practice of polygamy has the potential to erode those values, the documents state.

But Dave Quist, executive director of the Institute of Marriage and Family Canada, insisted amending the traditional definition of marriage for gay couples opened the door to other claims for legal recognition — including polygamy.
